We specialize in the sale and repair of jewelry and watches. We sell an array of jewelry for all occasions including engagements, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, religious sacraments, and all holidays. We invite you to visit our family-owned store so that you may experience firsthand the exceptional service we’ve continued to provide the Bay Area for over 70 years. Don’t take our word for it – check us out on Yelp!

Oaks Jewelers was founded in 1948 by Henry Accornero and his half brother, Bob Zavattaro. At that time, the store was approximately half the size it is today, and was operated solely by the two dedicated brothers. Later, Henry’s wife Angie joined the Oaks Jewelers team.

Today Oaks Jewelers continues to be run by the Accornero family. Although Henry has officially retired, he still drops by to visit the business he founded over 70 years ago. Oaks is currently owned by Henry’s youngest son, Jeff Accornero, who is grooming his daughter Melissa Accornero-Macchi to take over the family business. Henry’s daughter, Cheryl Accornero, also works as a sales associate at Oaks Jewelers. With the dedication of experienced sales associate and designer Colleen Abramovitz, sales associate and gemologist Joseph Pagano, and watch repairman Larry More, the Accornero family continues to preserve Oaks Jewelers’ legacy of superior customer service, and quality fine jewelry.

Morningtide

Lisa Wong Jackson and Lisa Fontaine, owners of Morningtide

847 Cornell Avenue (at Solano)

morningtideshop.com

Morningtide is a lifestyle shop with a vision to carry thoughtfully curated women’s slow fashion (new and gently used), ceramics, gifts, home accessories, jewelry, gifts for kids, and sustainable living homewares by independent designers. Inspired by our West Coast Northern California upbringings, we strive to support our local artisans, ethical production practices, and provide high quality products made from natural materials.

Inspired by their upbringings along the coast of northern California, founders and friends Lisa Fontaine and Lisa Wong Jackson strongly believe in being thoughtful about the things they bring into their homes. Each piece should have a purpose, bring happiness and offer a sense of well being.

Lisa Fontaine is a Santa Cruz native and entrepreneur. Over the past several years, she has designed a line of women’s clothing called Hygge and run a small arts and crafts camp for children during the summer. Lately, her creative energy is poured into making wheel-thrown ceramics called Soil and Slip. Lisa lives in Berkeley with her three children and dog Bonnie.

Lisa Wong Jackson, a San Francisco native and graphic designer, has run her own custom design and stationery company called Good on Paper for over 18 years and has worked as a senior designer for an engineering/architecture firm for nearly 20 years. Lisa lives in Berkeley with her husband, two young boys, and dog Frankie. She keeps herself busy cooking, baking, taking photos, and being a baseball mom with the East Bay Cyclones.

Together, they believe in supporting their local artisan community, ethical  production practices, supporting Black-owned businesses through their “15% Pledge”, providing goods made from natural materials, supporting social causes, and bringing the community together through the numerous fun pop-ups they host multiple times a month in front of their shop. They have collaborated on many creative projects over the course of their friendship—their creative career paths have crossed once again in the creation of Morningtide.

Fern’s Garden

1831 Solano Avenue (at Colusa)

fernsgarden.com

Welcome to Fern’s Garden, a place to find beautiful, hand crafted, affordable items that are made in the U.S.A. or abroad in an ethical manner. The artisans here that create and share their beautiful work earn a fair wage, and we support many American made companies. For the creations that are made abroad, we strive to seek out makers that pay fair wages and give back to their communities. You will notice that every product on this site explains where and how it is made. When you buy at Fern’s Garden, you can purchase something beautiful and feel good about helping those who really put their hands and heart into the work.

Fern’s Garden: Making a Difference

Once upon a time… our cars, appliances, furniture and clothes were all made in the USA. Gradually, these products were replaced by those made overseas. The gift industry has been no exception to the “globalization” trend. American artisans have been particularly challenged with copies of their work showing up on the mass market.

Once upon a time… a brother and a sister decided to combine their talents to look for the American Dream. Musician Jacob Sokoloff had a talent for creating musically tuned windchimes from steel pipes. His sister Fern had a vision that people all over the world might enjoy these enchanting chimes. From the garage where they started their company 35 years ago, Jacob’s Musical Chimes grew to become ubiquitous in the world of perfectly tuned chimes. The two were realizing the American Dream that an artisan with nothing more than a workshop and a vision could find success in this great land of opportunity.

Fern’s 35 years of experience in the gift industry gave her a unique perspective and insight to the challenges American craftspeople face in this changing world. Fern was living the struggle, as well as witnessing the hardships being suffered by her colleagues. She realized that even one great store focused on American Artisans could make a difference. And so Fern’s Garden was born as a venue for the hard working American artisan as well as a place to support Fair Traded, ethically made, imported art and craft.

Fern opened her first store in Long Beach, California in 2004. In 2017 a second store opened in Berkeley, California. Fern’s Garden is indeed a glorious “garden” of gifts. Please join us in our mission to support home grown talent, and not lose the beautiful art and craft created in this country. Thank you for your support, and for spreading the word. We thank you, and the artists thank you even more!

Picnic Rotisserie

862 San Pablo Avenue (at Solano)

It all started with two neighbors taking walks to the park with babies in strollers and dreams of starting a restaurant in Albany serving the kind of food we wished was available for our growing families. Once we committed to the concept for Picnic, we got to work. We started renting commercial kitchen space at Forage Kitchen in Oakland in 2017 and began selling our sausage and charcuterie at the Ecology Center’s downtown Berkeley Farmers Market and the Kensington Farmers Market. In 2019 our Chicken Liver Mousse, a farmers market favorite, won a Good Food Award recognizing our craftsmanship and flavor as well as environmental responsibility. Now our little babies are little kids and our dream restaurant is a reality. We’re humbled by the amazing support we’ve received along the way to creating our restaurant and look forward to welcoming you into Picnic.

Susannah is our sausage queen and brings her years of experience as a butcher/salumist at local restaurants including Cafe Rouge in Berkeley and Clove and Hoof in Oakland to Picnic. Leslie brings business administration, finance, and facilities experience to Picnic from her background working at tech start ups and labs at UC Berkeley. Each day we learn something new from each other and we love working side by side in all aspects of running Picnic.

Dr. Charlie Prins, Chiropractor

I utilize chiropractic care and Applied Kinesiology (AK) to aid in improving improve the health and wellness of patients’ lives. I take a ‘whole person’ approach in chiropractic care, which entails searching for the underlying causes of disease, muscle weakness, and pain, as opposed to just treating the symptoms.

Many seemingly, unrelated symptoms often arise from imbalance in the spinal column, and I will integrate the information I discover through a thorough health history and physical examination to aid in determining the root of your problem. This enables me to mold a personalized wellness plan, allowing patients to function optimally in all areas of their lives.

No Drugs – No Surgery

At the age of 18, after exercising I lost feeling from my waist down; I couldn’t feel parts of my legs and I couldn’t tell when I was voiding. Doctors told me I had a fractured vertebra that could have been there for years (they just found it!) and I needed surgery or else I would end up in a wheelchair five years later. I declined undergoing surgery, and instead when I got to college I accompanied a friend on an appointment to see his chiropractor. She examined me, studied my x-rays, and began my treatment plan. That was the beginning of my journey that has brought me to a profession where I can help others without the use of drugs or surgery!

Since that time, I have continued to lead an active life, uninterrupted. I have back-packed, snow- and water-skied. I strive to continually improve my skills to better serve the needs of those who put their trust in what chiropractic can do.

A Chiropractic Education

I graduated from Rutgers University, with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Journalism. As much as I enjoyed delving into politics (and still do), I knew there was a part of me that always wanted to help people on a deeper level.

After a few years of working post undergrad, I decided to become a chiropractor. I went back to college to obtain the pre-med courses I needed to enroll in chiropractic school. I then traveled to the South and the West of the country visiting schools to determine which would be the best fit for me. I chose Life Chiropractic College-West, located then in San Lorenzo, California. It was the right decision! While in chiropractic school and completing graduate exams, I worked for two doctors doing AK. I was so well prepared for the clinical world upon graduation; I was able to give one of the doctors his first vacation in 7 years (He ended up taking 6 weeks off!).

My Philosophy

As I have gotten older, I have come to accept the fact that most things in life are not black and white. This has proven to be so true regarding health and wellness. Wellness is not simply the absence of disease, but being able to bend over and not have your back go into spasms. Wellness is living without having to worry about when to take the next pill to regulate something that the human body is designed to control without external intervention. Waking up and looking forward to your day should be a normal, regular occurrence! Eating real food that nourishes your body and mind are also an integral part of being healthy.

On a Personal Note…

I have been a resident of Albany, CA for the past 30 years. My daughter, now grown, and flown from the coop, attended Albany public schools from K thru 12 (I even got to be the PTA president, when she was in third grade!). I have served on the boards of several local non-profit organizations, including the Albany Chamber of Commerce (two times). I am a founding board member of the Albany Education Foundation (helping fund programs in the local school district) and a founder of Health in Common, an umbrella group of health care providers and consumers in the SF Bay area. I also served for a year on the Albany Charter Review Committee. In addition, I have brought chiropractic services to a clinic in Berkeley that serves the needs of the uninsured and local homeless population established and run by U.C. Berkeley students, for 19 years. In April of 2014, I traveled to Guatemala, to study Spanish, and volunteer in a health clinic; Primeros Pasos, providing chiropractic care to indigenous Mayan farmers and locals from the city of Xela.

I remain passionate about chiropractic and natural health care, I wish all could receive care regularly!
